The smoking cessation program, SCRIPT®, consists of a comprehensive training workshop for healthcare providers, clinicians and health educators.

This in-depth training ensures participants know how to use SCRIPT® and are comfortable integrating it into routine prenatal care and follow up care protocols.

Four modules are included. Training is available for modules 1 & 2 or modules 3 & 4.

Staff responsible for implementing and evaluating the program will need all four modules. Staff responsible for counseling patients may only need modules 1 & 2.

Patient Guide

A 32-page patient education booklet, A Pregnant Woman's Guide to Quit Smoking, provides strategies and tips to increase success.

The guide contains a self-directed 7-day plan that culminates a quit date set by the pregnant smoker.

An 8-minute motivational video, Commit to Quit, features former pregnant smokers describing their motivation and strategies to successfully quit smoking.

The video demonstrates behavioral skills to quit smoking and augments provider counseling.

Counseling

An initial counseling intervention held between the pregnant smoker and the healthcare professional.

Counseling for 10-15 minutes utilizes the 5As framework and introduces the pregnant smoker to the patient guide.

The healthcare professional follows a semi-structured dialogue to share proven cessation strategies with the pregnant smoker and to encourage her to identify her own reasons for quitting.

Training on follow-up

At a follow-up visit, the healthcare professional provides counseling with the patient to encourage or maintain smoking cessation. Emphasis is placed on establishing a smoke-free home environment.
